What happens when a bunch of Tacoma metal workers, box makers, bartenders, cable operators, interpreters, Mormons, Catholics, Atheists, Agnostics, slackers, stoners, go-getters, vagabonds, male sluts, and virgins form a band? Punk-rock-folk reggae-country,  Motherfucker! Yeah!

Imagine that Skankin Pickle got in on the folk-punk/bluegrass thing that’s going around these days-now keep that image in your head-its pretty much The Fun Police. Honestly. The Fun Police have the same lively, occasionally funky, reggae-punk sound. But don’t take my word for it, go check out their Band Camp or their Facebook and have a merry ol’ time. The Fun Police have just released their second full length “Clown Control,” you can get that for dirt cheap off of their Last Fm, or you can download  a free EP HERE.

Interesting question: Are there punks in Oklahoma? As it turns out yes, yes indeed. Black Cop is a three piece hardcore band from Stillwater, OK, and its fucking brutal. As in extremely fast, thrash, hardcore, violent, angry, all around quality stuff. They’ve just released their first full length CD off of Torn Shoe Records this January. You can download one track for free off their bandcamp, and honestly, you could pirate the rest really easily from their bandcamp as well…if you’re a soulless bastard.

I would pay attention to these guys, the recording quality on the CD might not be the best, but they’ve got a great 80’s hardcore-thrash kind of sound, which judging by their videos is amazing to see live. If you’re into that kind of thing. Plus! They’re playing this year’s Southwest Music Conference and Festival (SXSW). I had no idea what that is either… but,  a simple google search revealed its kind of a big deal in the South/Southwest world, so that’s got to count for something. So if you’re like me, i.e age < 30, and wish you had a chance to see any 80’s hardcore bands, then these guys would be exactly the opposite of Herpes:  a great thing to catch. (Darion totally added this last part fuck that guy)

This is the video for their track “Unearth,” which you can download for free off of their bandcamp.

P.S.

-YAY! This is our 50th blog post. I raise my glass to you, my dear readers!

Few things here. First of all, Kalamazoo Michigan is a real place. Second of all, deep within the recesses of what I thought was a fictional realm invented by doctor suess, is The Extreme Unicorns. Third, I know this is kind of late, but! Nothing Nice to Say is off of hiatus, (wooooo!!!!!!) so that’s pretty cool I guess.

Anyway- The Extreme Unicorns. Vocalist/bassist Lex gives the band that sort of, tamer (relatively speaking) almost riot grrl vocal sound you might find in Slutever or The Gits. Plus, guitarist Tim (one word) and drummer Rob O’Toole have soft gingery beards that have been known to cure blindness.

They do some really great covers of The Misfits and Britney Spears, and! They only have one original song out now, so now is your chance to say you liked them before they were cool!

Go the their website or buy their merch. Listen. Be amazed.

To quote Darion Conwell: “enjoy the music, respect the house, and don’t be a dick.” Fun story there, almost got kicked out of this house for being a dick. Not really my fault, I got that they wanted me to be pushing people, I didn’t choose to continue getting pushed by other people, per-say.

Anyways, I’ve already talked about white wards in a past post so I won’t re-engage ranting, but I am quite a fan. You can download their 7″ here. Likewise if you’re into death metal or  hardcore thrash death, Bone Sickness is just fucking dandy to see live. I’ve never seen the other two bands, so out of laziness I’m not going to write anything, but fuck it go anyways. I command you, all twenty-six people who may ever read this.

Unexpected Amateur Covers

I’m sure that like many of you I am constantly finding myself being surprised by the various strange covers that I see on youtube. This week I’ll be sharing a few of my favorite with you. Please keep all arms and legs in the vehicle, and keep all questions and comment until the end of the tour (if you have any favorite covers, feel free to post them).

Johnny Cash “Sunday Morning Coming Down” cover by Jesse Morris

This is without a doubt Johnny Cash Punk Reincarnate. I don’t know how he stole Cash’s voice, but for the love of science, SOMEONE GIVE THIS MAN A JOINT!

Alternate universe Johnny Cash blows your mind.

Britney Spears “Toxic” cover by Molly Lewis

This girl had got some good uke skills . I’ve never been too crazy about Britney Spears, but I’ve always had a soft spot for the song Toxic. It seems that there is a good trend of people doing ukulele covers as of late, so expect a Top Five article about uke covers at some point.

Bow down to the uke

Jack Johnson/ODB/Beatles/Snoop Dogg cover by Michael Hurwitz and Jaysen Lee-St. John

These two live in Shanghai China, and Jam out every day. These are the kind of roommates I wish I had. They are so entertaining that I found it hard to choose just one of their youtube mash-ups for this post. So I would suggest browsing their other stuff here.

Best roommates ever

Foo Fighters “Everlong” cover by Dylan and Lauren

These two call themselves “Sandalwood'”, and while this might not be the most skillful cover of a song, it is by all means surprising. I would have to give more credit to the guitarist (Dylan) in this video for his skills, but HELL they both get some major respect for being so young in the first place.

Curfew has gotta make it hard to run a good band.

Lil’ Jon “Get Low” cover by Jackson Foote, Eden Neville, and Alex Koste

A room full of what appears to be the whitest teenagers on earth have managed to make a catchy Lil’ Jon song even harder to resist. I feel so torn by this, part of me knows that I have zero respect for Lil’ Jon and the other part of me thinks that the kids in this video would probably invite me to their youth group, yet when the two come together… it’s actually really appealing to me. Do two wrongs make a right?

Apparently so.

Sooo white…

Half-way through December we bring you another post about something! Here’s four bands from Olympia you should probably at least see live, if not listen to in your spare time. Trust me. I have a blog/spare time.

If you enjoy punk, metal, indie, hardcore, some combination of them all, or music from your own town, go ahead and listen. It’s all from Olympia, WA, hence the post´s title. It’s clever, work with me.

Christan Mistress

Get their shit here. I’d write a longer description, but just listen to the damn songs, its great. If you like metal.

Gun Outfit

Its pretty. Kind of sounds like if Gibby Haynes had formed Modest Mouse with Caroline Keith and every so often they played a punk song. For the sake of clarity, Caroline Keith is actually the singer/songwriter for Gun Outfit, Gibby Haynes is the singer for the Butthole Surfers, whose voice I just likened to Dylan Sharp, the other singer/songwriter for Gun Outfit…anyway, check out their lastfm page. GO!

(This is also a good song)

Tartarus

OK- So the recording quality isn’t amazing, but these guys are disturbingly talented live. I mean really, all of them can fucking shred. I recommend you look em up here and be sure to catch ´em live when you can, finally got myself there in October and it was epic. So really, go so, see them, enjoy.

Go Get The Scissors

These guys had a following in Olympia once upon a time when I was about thirteen. Regardless they’re still great, but as far as I know pretty have much stopped existing. Guess when suddenly the whole scene was either hardcore or christian post-punk there just wasn’t room for ´em. Either way I enjoy it, and thus my taste is inflicted onto you.

Go Get The Scissors – I Walk the Line

Go Get The Scissors – Rise Up Below The Belt

White Wards

Their lastfm, there are some better qualities mp3s there. White Wards is great, if you like hardcore. If you don’t, move somewhere else. Just kidding, I love you. But really.

White Wards – Fucking a Dead Body

White Wards – Bad Decisions

Andrew

Imagine if you will, if the Adolescents and Josie And The Pussycats got hammered, and had a crazy night of wild unprotected sex in the romantic confines of a Motel 6. Well now that this image has left your head, you can finally understand the kickass love child of this unexpected union that is TacocaT.

I had the pleasure of seeing these folks a few years back with Schoolyard Heroes, a band who I disdain with a seething passion, (but that’s for a different time). Anyhoo, Tacocat mesmerized me and those around me with an up-beat poppy post-punk style, that just makes you want to love and dance, kinda like an audio Hippy-Flip. Besides being supportive of dyslexia; TacocaT just warps you back to a simpler time of Freshman year. A time when you only want to go to first base, when you’re saving for that sick volcano, when you’re living in your parents basement, and when you’re really high and realize Jack Black was in the movie Waterworld. To top it all off, if you look at the picture above, there’s another surprise….Twins!

So by combining twins, fun, and slightly demented teen punk-pop, we find that TacocaT really is a truly riveting band, straight from Seattle who you all should hear, see, and feel. They receive an A for automatically ass-kicking.

Listen, and be amazed, I hope you like kazoo solos:

So, heres a little context for this story: I’m in Peru. There ya go.

AND…

About five days ago the wonder and bliss of beautiful Peru wore off. No longer was Miraflores the neighborhood of my dreams and the land of opportunity. Suddenly this oasis of culture, the arts, and hospitality became a horrendous dirty city full of gringo-hating, mean spirited rapists. This change in attitude took place after I weighed the lessons of the week. Most of them were learned the only way a true lesson can be: The hard way. These included:

  • Not everyone has good intentions and my well-being in mind
  • It took me 6 months to figure out how to get here,  there is no way anyone can come visit me on a whim
  • I can’t maintain a relationship with 2 Facebook chat sessions a week

All lessons learned come with some harsh realizations, the toughest of the two:

  • -Holy balls, NO ONE HERE UNDERSTANDS MY ACCENT. I literally can´t voice my needs to anyone.

and, of course:

  • -I am completely and utterly alone.

So after a few nights of nightmares after bawling myself to sleep something inside of me (and my mother)  said, HEY.  You’re a brave girl. Time to put those big, brave girl panties on and pull your fucking-self together. Seriously.

So today, I did just that. I enrolled in school, started spanish classes, made some friends, and even made some evening plans. I went grocery shopping, I went to work, I exercised.

I had goals when I came here, I did. I wanted to learn Spanish. I wanted to learn about culture. I wanted to backpack. I wanted to be on my own for the first time in my adult life and not another lives-at-home college graduate. I wanted adventure. And now that I think about it, with my new, positive outlook and a refreshed view of this country I have chosen to call my home, I see that I am on the way to achieving EVERY SINGLE ONE of these objectives.

So whats next? MUSIC.

The third night I was in Lima I met a boy in the park. He was a mystic from the jungle who one day just made the 3 day walk out of the Amazon, hopped on a bus and came to Miraflores to enroll in college with hopes of becoming an astronaut. Before reading my energy with his weird mind tricks and making me imagine various scenes from what sounded to me like strange surrealist paintings he first declared that I was a punk. Did I have a boyfriend with a mohawk? How many drugs do I take? Do I wear my ballet flats in the mosh pits? After explaining to him that no, I don´t binge drink every night and I have other commitments than “being a punk” that require me to have more than one pair of shoes he made me dance and decided that, yes. Punks here dance the same way.

And that was the last I heard about the punk scene in Lima, Peru.

I did some research and found out that like the United States, Peru has a rich history of punk dating back to the 1960s. THE 60s! And if mystic straight-off-the-bus jungle boy can find it, I can too, right? Punk can’t truly be dead ALL over the world, can it?

So tonight its off to the jam-sesh at the local jazz house with my new euro-trash amigos to talk to musicians about, well,  where to find this elusive punk. And hopefully very soon I will be reporting back and bringing the world of South American hardcore to you.

Because if a strange kid with a loin cloth, some blow darts and literally no spanish speaking ability can make it in Lima, a tiny gringa with safari shorts, geeky sandals and some spanish speaking ability can make it here, too.

We realize you’re probably still recovering from Mas Sol. Makes sense, only natural after all. Still, take a second away from your week long hangover of torrenting seasons of tv shows to ask yourself-

Do you like feeling good? Do you ever wish you had a chance to see The Ramones in their prime? Fear not, the universe has given you a second chance.

For only forming in 2009, Grandmas Boyfriend has skyrocketed onto the scene. After playing about two million house shows and bars in the Bay Area during 2009, Grandmas Boyfriend said fuck it to the states, and went on to tour Japan in the summer of 2010. Upon their return the band recruited their second guitarist Ralph (one word, like Madonna) and went on to release their first promo in May of 2011. So don’t miss your chance to see them at The Know in Portland on 6/26 and at Le Voyuer in Olympia on 6/27!

So if you’ve ever liked the sound of The Exploding Hearts, The Ramones, The Queers, or basically happiness,  now is your chance to show it. See you at The Voyeur on the 27th.

Also, Mas Sol pictures are currently being facebook stalked out of everybody who took them, they will then be all in one place on the blog shortly, as soon as we update it/get them all in once place.
